چکیده
Von der Philosophisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät angenommen. Berne. I am really grateful to many people that directly or indirectly contributed to this work. I do apologize if I do not explicitly name all of them here, but I indeed thank everyone who helped. First I want to express my gratitude to my advisor, Prof. Dr. Torsten Braun. His trust in my work even when things seemed not to be on track was fundamental for my success. His clever advices always helped me to shape my research work toward something more meaningful. Professor Braun gave me the opportunity to work in the NCCR/MICS project in which I developed the concepts presented in this thesis. He always encouraged me to publish my research results in good conferences and so provided me great opportunities to meet other researchers from whom I got invaluable feedbacks. I also want to thank Prof. Dr. Christian Tschudin for having accepted to conduct the " koreferat " of this work, and Prof. Dr. Oscar Nierstrasz for having accepted to be the co-examinator of the thesis. My experience at the University of Berne was very positive. Even though the time was very short for me as a whole, I had some insightful discussions with most of my fellow PhD students. I want to thank the new PhD candidates for their kind assistance whenever I needed it. I thank Marc Danzeisen for the nice talks we had from which I learned a lot about telecommunications carriers. I thank Marc Heissenbüttel for the fruitful discussions we had in the scope of the NCCR/MICS project in which we both developed our thesis concepts. I thank Matthias Scheidegger for his insightful clues on subtle Unix/linux related issues. I want to thank Marc Alain Steinemann for the various social activities he organized very well. Special thanks go to Attila Weyland with whom I frequently discussed many general issues. I really appreciated his friendship in many instances. I also want to thank Dr. Florian Baumgartner, who has been working as a postdoc research assistant and lecturer at IAM. I really learned a lot from his work experience. iii during my first year of studies but continued at the university as a postdoc research assistant and lecturer. I really learned a lot from his work experience. I thank my former colleagues at the University of Berne. In particular, I thank Roland Balmer, Silvia Stattenberber, and Dr. Günther Stattenberger …

Local Route Recovery Algorithms for Improving Multihop TCP Performance in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks
TCP (transmission control protocol) will for sure continue to be the major transport protocol in wireless environments, due to its large install-base in existing applications. Indeed, in future ad hoc wireless networks where devices communicate among each other over multihop routes, TCP is expected to be the prominent protocol for data exchange (e.g., multihop wireless FTP). However, there is a...

Wireless networks have experienced drastic evolutions in the last few years. While many aspects related to “single cell” wireless networks were already resolved, wireless multihop networks still suffer poor performances and limited capacities. This thesis aims at providing acceptable quality of service in terms of throughput and loss ratio to end users in various wireless multihop environments....
متن کاملGateway Strategies for VoIP Traffic over Wireless Multihop Networks
When supporting both voice and TCP in a wireless multihop network, there are two conflicting goals: to protect the VoIP traffic, and to completely utilize the remaining capacity for TCP. We investigate the interaction between these two popular categories of traffic and find that conventional solution approaches, such as enhanced TCP variants, priority queues, bandwidth limitation, and traffic s...
متن کاملModelling and Analysis of TCP Performance in Wireless Multihop Networks
Researchers have used extensive simulation and experimental studies to understand TCP performance in wireless multihop networks. In contrast, the objective of this paper is to theoretically analyze TCP performance in this environment. By examining the case of running one TCP session over a string topology, a system model for analyzing TCP performance in multihop wireless networks is proposed, w...
متن کاملFast Retransmission & Recovery Algorithm to Improve Performance over Multihop Wireless Mesh Network
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the dominant reliable transport protocol utilized in the Internet. Improving the performance of TCP associated with the presence of multi-hop is one of the research challenges in wireless mesh networks. Wireless mesh networks have large round trip time variations and these variations are dependent on the number of hops. In wireless mesh network, when conge...
متن کاملEffective data transport for reliable end to end communication in multihop wireless networks
Sherif M. ElRakabawy This thesis addresses the problem of effective reliable data transport in multihop wireless net‐ works. Multihop wireless networks are mostly autonomous, decentralized networks, in which a wireless node acts both as a host and a router for data packets. As reliable data transport makes up over 90% out of all traffic in the Internet, its effective operation is of significant...
